On Monday night, April 1, 2024, the iconic T-Boz and Chili of TLC took to the iHeart concert stage and performed 'No Scrubs', 'Creep', and 'Waterfalls'. During 'Waterfalls' to the amazement of viewers and the crowd, rapping the late Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes' verse, was none other than the 'Big Energy' rapper Latto! After the performance was over there was a ton of backlash about the choice to pay homage to our beloved Left Eye. And on the note of the backlash received, I'd like to attempt to shed a little light on why the performance was ill-received by the viewers. To the people upset that other people keep bringing up Lil Mama. You simply do not understand the aesthetic or culture that is TLC. Latto is beautiful, talented, and she's the only one that could've remixed that Mariah Carey throwback and did it the justice she gave it! Lil sis ate DOWN! But Latto wasn't listening to TLC, I'm not saying she never heard their songs, I'm saying that she wasn't LISTENING to TLC! Nobody wants to see Latto perform Left Eye verse, we want to see Latto EMBODY LEFT EYE, and THAT was what's missing! Lil Mama understands the assignment. Even giving Latto grace for being winded and forgetting to say lyrics, the entire performance was lackluster. As a forever fan of TLC it simply did not GIVE what I and other viewers would have loved to see. No one is taking a damn thing from Lotto talent. However, we are going to call a spade a spade and say that no one does 'Left Eye' like Lil Mama. That fact would be the consensus no matter who, other than her, was mistakenly chosen for the job. And THATS, true tea.
